The first Veterinary Dispensary was established at Chenikuthi, Guwahati with Superintendent of Civil Veterinary Department under the British rule in the year of 1905.
Initially, Veterinary Sector in the state of Assam was under Superintendent, Civil Veterinary Department. The Department was divided into two zones comprising Jorhat as upper Assam Circle and Guwahati as lower Assam Circle headed by Veterinary Inspector.The Veterinary Assistant Surgeons and Supervisory Field Assistants worked in the dispensaries under the Veterinary Inspector. The Veterinary Inspector was responsible for regular inspection of Veterinary Dispensaries. This system ended in the year of 1940.The Department then came under Director, Veterinary with District Veterinary Officers at the District level.
The present administrative setup, i.e. Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary, Assam came into effect from 1950.
